A 26-year-old mother has passed away after being told her symptoms were just ‘normal’ side effects of contraceptive injections.
Alexandra Hodson had been experiencing bleeding in between periods and after intercourse, pain during sex, and other symptoms of cervical cancer. However, her nurse told her that her symptoms were ‘normal’ because of contraceptive injections.
It was then discovered after a smear test that she had a tumor in her cervix and Alexandra began receiving chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
On August 8, Alexandra tragically passed away from the illness.
Her sister, Nicola, paid tribute to the mother on a GoFundMe page set up for her. “I never thought I’d be having to write an update like this and I wish I didn’t have to,” she wrote.
“We sadly lost my beautiful sister Saturday 8th August. She was so brave, strong and determined and she fought to the very end.”
She continued: “It was completely heartbreaking and due to Covid we knew it meant that we would struggle to make some of the memories we would have liked to and to fulfill some of Alexandra’s bucket list.
“We still managed to make memories as a family and we spent as much time together as we could.”
Nicola added: “Just want to say a big heartfelt thank you to you all for your support, it meant so much to us how much people cared and it gave us an opportunity to try a treatment that could have been the one to save Alexandra, sadly it wasn’t meant to be.”
Speaking about Alexandra’s diagnosis, Nicola said: “She knew this wasn’t normal and she felt so guilty after that she didn’t question it further.”
An MRI scan confirmed Alexandra’s diagnosis and a further scan showed that the tumor was not responding to treatment. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy only damaged her other organs.
She was transferred to the Clatterbridge Cancer Center for brachytherapy and sent to London for further treatment. But even though the tumor shrunk, it started to grow back.
The common symptoms of cervical cancer are unusual bleeding, pain during or after sex, pelvic pain, and vaginal discharge that smells.
