A mother has delivered twins only one month after giving birth to a premature son.
20-year-old Arifa Sultana from Bangladesh was getting used to parenthood after giving birth to her first child last month.
But only 26 days later, she was stunned when her waters broke again. She was taken to hospital in the Jessero district.
Doctors were shocked to discover she had another two babies. It was revealed that the mother had a double uterus – an incredibly rare condition a woman may have without realizing.
But doctors have quizzed how two heartbeats had gone undetected in the bizarre incident.
Sheila Poddar, a gynecologist who treated the mother, said: “She didn’t realize she was still pregnant with the twins.
“Her waters broke again 26 days after the first baby was born and she rushed to us.”
The twins, one girl and one boy, were healthy and had no health problems despite never being checked throughout pregnancy.
The mother and her husband, Sumon Biswas are very happy to take care of all three children.
Dr. Podder said it was the first time she had experienced such rare incident, according to local media The Tribune.
“It’s a rare incident. I have seen such a case for the first time. I had not even heard about such incident before.
“The first baby was born from one womb. The two babies born here are from the other womb.”
Uterus didelphys, a condition that is present from birth, often causes no symptoms. Women who have a double uterus can successfully have children but it could increase the risks of premature birth or miscarriage.
While it affects one in 3,000 women, the odds of carrying a baby in each uterus at the same time are one in five million.
