Two mothers have been slammed for scrawling their names in drying cement under a WWI memorial.
Workmen put the bench to mark ‘100 Years of Remembrance.’
The vandals attacked the bench only a few hours after installation, and they did it in front of their children.
Horncastle mayor Brian Burbidge said he was saddened by what happened. “I can only hope those responsible will learn to appreciate that the bench was placed there to commemorate the sacrifices made by so many during the First World War.”
Horncastle Town Council also said: “The bench is fine but the writing in the concrete is obviously not supposed to be there. It is disappointing that this happened.”
Residents have branded the two women ‘sickening’ and ‘disgusting’ and demanded they clean up the mess.
Police have questioned one mother after ‘Jane’ and ‘Shell’ were crudely marked under the bench. Photos appeared to reveal the two women leaning down next to the secured bench with their children’s pushchairs parked close.
One infant is seen watching the women in Horncastle, Lincolnshire.
“How could anyone want to damage something so beautiful, they are sickening fools,” resident Lyn Hodgson said.
“Though these adults are teaching their kids to write their names in concrete ‘for eternity’ I doubt they mentioned the meaning of the commemoration seat to the kids,” Wendy Steadman raged.
“Those responsible should be made to do community service and get out and clean up the litter in the town. They should be named and shamed as well — disgusting individuals,” Michelle Morris said.
“This is pretty unbelievable. No words to express how sad this is for those of us who wish to remember those who gave their lives,” Jo Carr wrote.
“Find the person who did this and make them repair the damage,” Gary Smith added.
