A furious Muslim mum has lashed out at Aldi and accused their vegetarian lasagna sauce of smelling and tasting like bacon.
39-year-old Rianne Ward refuses to eat pork ever since she converted to Islam several years ago. For that reason, the mother bought a lasagna sauce labeled as vegetarian when she decided to prepare the delicious dish for the family.
As Ward explained, however, the sauce instantly made her feel sick because it “tasted like bacon.”
“I just sat down and my young son said ‘Mummy, this smells like bacon,’” the mother claimed in an interview with Derby Telegraph.
“When I ate it, it tasted just like bacon which made me feel sick. I was absolutely seething and went back down to the store.
“I just went in with the jar of sauce and made them smell it. I thought it must have been contaminated.”
Following her confrontation with Aldi’s staff, the woman filed a formal complaint despite being reassured that the sauce indeed is meat-free.
“I’m absolutely furious. I’ve been a Muslim for years now and avoided bacon for so long. Then this happens. I felt like I’d betrayed my religion. Aldi have told me they are going to test the sauce to see if it has been contaminated. It’s just not on,” the 39-year-old added, saying she hopes to get compensated.
After Ward’s story went viral, Aldi representative spoke out to LADbible and said:
“We are sorry to hear Ms. Ward is unhappy with this product but can reassure her that our lasagna sauce is completely meat free. The product is flavored with smoked salt which gives the distinctive taste.”
