Marks & Spencer representatives have spoken out and slammed all claims saying that their brand toilet paper has an Arabic word for Allah imprinted on the plies.
After one angry customer filmed the toilet paper and claimed that the motif on it stands for the word ‘Allah,’ the footage instantly went viral with thousands of Muslims requesting people to boycott the company.
In response to these accusations, M&S quickly investigated the matter and responded by explaining that the motif is “categorically an aloe vera leaf.”
In the short clip that went viral, the man presenting his conspiracy theory urged his “brothers and sisters” to avoid the toilet paper at all costs because “every toilet tissue has the name of Allah on it.”
“Recently I bought toilet tissue from Marks & Spencer and when I opened one of them, it has the name of Allah, as you can see,” the man said.
“So please brothers and sisters, prevent yourselves from buying this particular toilet tissue, or try boycott Marks & Spencers, because every toilet tissue has the name of Allah on it. Thank you very much, please share this video.”
Following the accusations, M&S spokesperson responded by saying:
“The motif on the aloe vera toilet tissue, which we have been selling for over five years, is categorical of an aloe vera leaf and we have investigated and confirmed this with our suppliers.”
While plenty of Muslims supported the idea to boycott the company, the footage divided the internet, and some viewers couldn’t help but laugh at the “ridiculous conspiracy theory.”
“Sorry you’ve had to deal with such a ridiculous thing M&S! Yet again I’m embarrassed by my fellow Muslims. I love your stores and will continue shopping in them,” one person wrote.
“This is called pareidolia. That’s when your brain sees a pattern that isn’t really there. For example, when you look at a cloud and it looks like a rabbit, or you look at the moon and see a face,” another one explained.
“Religious people tend to suffer from it more than most. They see the face of Jesus in a slice of toast or the name of God on toilet paper. So do people who are into conspiracy theories.”
Despite all the responses and explanations, however, some people refused to back down.
“This is absolutely disgusting and has caused upset and sadness to me and many people,” Samira Akhtar wrote on Facebook where she shared the footage.
“It’s even more upsetting that they are trying to say that the word is in actual fact a representation of an aloe vera plant.
“I for one will definitely be boycotting M&S products and encourage those who believe this product is causing offense to do the same.”
Another Muslim, Musa Ahmed, started a change.org petition demanding the company to change its toilet paper pattern saying it is “deliberately insulting our religion.”
