5-Year-Old Died From Mysterious Illness Associated With COVID-19


A couple of days back, health officials put a memo regarding a mysterious illness that is targeting children and said to be linked with coronavirus.

A few days after this memo was published, a young boy dies due to this illness in New York City.

Andrew Cuomo, the governor of the city in his press conference, shared unfortunate news where a five-year-old boy died from this complicated illness on Thursday. The doctors have titled this illness as a pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome.

Though the syndrome is very rare, the city is witnessing some cases where young kids who are infected with coronavirus are experiencing symptoms similar to toxic-shock like syndrome or Kawasaki disease.

Kawasaki disease is quite a rare disease, which results in inflammation in the blood vessels; however, it is treatable. Toxic shock syndrome is a fatal bacterial infection.

The governor said that while coronavirus does not appear to be affecting children like it does adults, the health department of the city is examining different cases that pose similar situations.

He adds that such an unfortunate situation is a nightmare for every parent, and the city is taking the matter seriously. Children being affected by such illness are painful news and opens up a whole new chapter in the ongoing situation.

Work in the hospital’s critical care unit

New York, as of Friday, has reported 73 cases of children being infected with this illness.

On his press conference as well as Twitter, Cuomo warned parents to be more careful and be cautious of the warning signs, including severe abdominal pain, fever for over five days, lethargy, irritability, and difficulty in breathing.

Medical officers in Westchester County also made an announcement that a five-year-old had died from neurological complications resulted from the mysterious illness.

Dr. Michael Gewitz practicing at Maria Fareri Children’s hospital located in Valhalla said that they are still figuring out whether or not the child was suffering from any underlying disease.

As of now, the hospital has 11 children suffering from the same condition. And more than 100 children have been hospitalized in Europe and the US with this mysterious illness.
