A nude protester dubbed ‘Naked Athena’ struck yoga poses as she dared anti-riot officers to shoot her during an intense stand-off.
The protest with the queer twist occurred in Portland, Oregon, where peaceful demonstrators, as well as rioters, have been taking to streets for more than fifty nights following the beginning of the civil unrest sparked by the death of George Floyd.
On Saturday morning, just before the clock hit 2 am, one naked woman joined the protest and struck various yoga and ballet poses in front of anti-riot officers clad in gas masks, helmets, and heavy-duty gear.
As seen in the photos of the stand-off, ‘Naked Athena’ was wearing nothing but a beanie and a face mask as officers proceeded to launch pepper balls in her proximity in an attempt to get her to back off.
While a protester with a makeshift shield rushed to Naked Athena’s aid, she intentionally moved away from him and performed a series of poses as she exposed herself to the officers.
“She was incredibly vulnerable. It would have been incredibly painful to be shot with any of those munitions with no clothes on,” The Oregonian photographer Dave Killen told the outlet.
According to Mr. Killen, the officers dispersed some ten minutes after the unclothed protester arrived at the scene.
As per Portland laws, nudity in public is only illegal when there is an intention to arouse. Meanwhile, local courts have accepted nudity as a type of protest that overrules public decency laws.
