House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has accused President Trump of abusing the power of his office after he interfered in the sentencing of his associate Roger Stone.
After prosecutors urged seven to nine years in prison for Trump’s associate Roger Stone, Trump said in a tweet that it is a “horrible and very unfair situation.”
At a press conference on Thursday, Pelosi said: “We also saw the president this week demonstrate once again that he has no respect for the rule of law … by engaging in political interference in the sentencing of his associate Roger Stone.”
She said this is an abuse of power and accused Trump of manipulating federal law enforcement to serve his political interests.
“This is an abuse of power. The president is again trying to manipulate federal law enforcement to serve his political interests”, she added.
She said Trump thinks he’s above the law. And has no respect for the rule of law.
Pelosi asked: “But where are the Republicans to speak out on this blatant violation of the rule of law?”
After Trump tweeted that it is a “horrible and very unfair situation” after prosecutors urged seven to nine years in prison for Trump’s associate Roger Stone, the Justice Department called for a lighter sentence.
Pelosi said at the conference that the Justice Department should be above the political fray to provide Americans impartial justice.
When she was asked what Congress will do about this, Pelosi said: “They should be investigated. This is not what America is about, it is so wrong.”
Pelosi also criticized Attorney General William Barr for withdrawing the Justice Department sentencing recommendation
She said Barr has deeply damaged the rule of law and it is a disappointment to our country.
