The legendary voice-over artist Brice Armstrong has passed away.
He was 84 years old. The animation community is in mourning over the loss of the talented star.
Armstrong’s agency, the Mary Collins Agency, revealed in a Facebook post that he passed from natural causes on January 10.
He was best known as the narrator on the original Dragon Ball animated series.
‘Although many of you might not know Brice’s work, as he retired in 2009, many more of you knew Brice as an exceedingly talented voice actor, and a very sweet, funny guy,’ the agency’s post said.
Armstrong is a native of Dallas, Texas, he started his career in radio. He worked for many radio stations and he was selected into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2004.
Armstrong started doing voice over work for radio commercials in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Collins said, he was one of their ‘go-to voices’ – with Star Wars icon James Earl Jones even once told him, ‘I wish I had your vocal control.’
He was a gifted vocalist, he was also ‘camera shy.’ He always allowed his photo to be taken from the back or side, usually at a mic.’
Armstrong was also well known for celebrity impressions, known for Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Alfred Hitchcock, Cary Grant, Ed Wynn, Bela Lugosi, and Johnny Cash.
He became well known in the animation community for narrating the original Dragon Ball TV series, which ran from 1986 to 1989.
He voiced various characters in the 1990 follow-up series Dragon Ball Z and narrated the new series Dragon Ball that ran from 1995 to 2003.
‘Brice was the kindest, funniest person I’ve ever known. He was always humble, never in a bad mood–not the attitude you’d expect from such an industry legend,’ said Christopher Sabat, a Mary Collins Agency voice actor and founder of Okratron 5000.
Armstrong was preceded in death by his wife of 42-years Marianna, who passed away in 2008. He has six children.
