The story of Pat Henschel and Terry Donahue is getting the fame and attention it deserves, thanks to a Netflix documentary.
The documentary that will be available on Netflix on April 29 is centered around the hardships faced by the real-life lesbian couple.
The trailer is already out and it shows how the two met, fell for each other and how they kept their relationship shrouded in secrecy for more than six decades.
At the start of the trailer, Donahue and Henschel can be seen visiting a retirement home where they learn that they’ll be the first same-sex couple to live in the facility.
The story of the two then starts, highlighting all the troubles the LGBTQ community had to face in the past and how Donahue and Henschel struggled with their relationship.
The two women met in 1947. At that time, Henschel was 18 and Donahue was 22.
Donahue was a catcher in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. This was the same league that was featured in the hit 1992 movie named A League of Their Own.
Even though the two maintained their appearances in the public’s eyes, they were madly in love.
In the trailer, Donahue says: “We always wore dresses, makeup. The whole thing. Anybody who was not gay, they simply didn’t know.”
“I felt like I was sort of living a lie. I loved my mother but she would’ve disowned me,” Henschel adds.
The trailer then shows the time when the two decided to come out to their family, who always thought of them as roommates and best friends.
A Secret Love is directed by Christopher Bolan, Donahue’s great-nephew. Christopher started filming the documentary back in 2009 when the couple came out to him.
“I think love is love and it’s the most important thing,” Donahue says in the trailer. “What she means to me? She means everything to me,” Henschel says in an emotional interview.
At the end of the trailer, Christopher tells how Donahue had “kind of broke the rules your whole life.”
“Yes, I have,” Donahue answers. “That’s why I’m happy. No regrets – I’d do it all over again.”
The documentary is produced by Ryan Murphy and will be available for streaming on Netflix starting from April 29.
