SpaceX and Tesla boss Elon Musk has said that his new Neuralink brain chip will let users stream music directly to their brain.
When asked by computer scientist Austin Howard if the brain-implanted computer can let users listen to music, Musk said that the device will eventually let people stream music directly to their brains.
“If we implement neuralink – can we listen to music directly from our chips? Great feature,” Howard asked on Twitter.
Musk, who funds the project Neuralink, replied: “Yes.”
He also stated that the device ‘could help control hormone levels,’ and could be used for things such as ‘enhanced abilities and reasoning and anxiety relief.’
In another Twitter exchange, Pranay Pathole asked Musk: “Can Neuralink be used to re-train the aprt of the brain which is responsible for causing addiction or depression?” to which Musk replied: “For sure. This is both great & terrifying.”
He added: “Everything we’ve ever sensed or thought has been electrical signals. The early universe was just a soup of quarks and leptons. How did a very small piece of the universe start to think of itself as sentient?”
It was in 2016 when Neuralink was founded and it has held one public presentation about how the device works. Musk said at an event held last year that his new company is working on a ‘sewing machine-like’ device.
The chip, which is surgically inserted into the brain, could be initially used to help people with brain diseases. Musk said that having it fitted would be like undergoing laser eye surgery.
More information about the device is set to be announced on August 28.
