Scientists have discovered a new species of spiders that is extremely venomous and causes human flesh to rot away in seconds after a bite.
As the National Autonomous University of Mexico researchers confirmed, the venomous spiders they named as Loxosceles Tenochtitlan contain a very potent venom that can affect patches of skin as wide as 14 inches upon a bite.
While the animal isn’t considered to be lethal, the venom causes instant decay of the skin and flesh surrounding the area of the bite.
The terrifying species was discovered and is thought to be native to central Mexico, in particular, the Valley of Mexico.
According to professor Alejandro Valdez-Mondragon who discovered the species together with students Karen Solis, Alma Juarez, Claudia Navarro, and Mayra Cortez, the creature excels at hiding in isolated areas such as furniture and clothes where there are plenty of holes and only attacks when it feels threatened.
“As it is very similar to the Loxosceles misteca we thought that it had been introduced to this region by the shipping of ornamental plants, but when doing molecular biology studies of both species, we realized that they are completely different,” professor and biologist Valdez-Mondragon said.
“We provide them with the temperature, humidity and food to establish themselves in our homes, which puts us at risk of having an accident with them, although they also perform an important ecological function when feeding on insects.”
According to the experts, these spiders can be kept at bay by keeping homes clean and avoiding providing them with plenty of hiding spaces.
