In London, the New Year was marked by spectacular fireworks.
Meanwhile, several hundreds of thousands of individuals watched a sound and light show in Paris and at New York’s Times Square near to one people gathered for welcoming 2020.
The annual fall of Times Square Ball marked the entry of 2020 in the city. The ball that is lit up with 32256 lights, illuminated the Manhattan night sky as well as the fireworks set off in Central Park.
The London Mayor Sadiq Khan promised the best fireworks in London to welcome the new decade. While Hong Kong did so with neon-lit promenades. Due to the protests, authorities had to cancel the main midnight fireworks for the first time in 20 years.
In India, protests were carried out by Indians who are angered by The Citizen Amendment Act, which according to them discriminates against a certain sect in the country as well as challenges India’s secular constitution.
While there were demonstrations planned in New Delhi, in Bhopal, India, Jashn-e-Bhopal 2020 went on smoothly.
In Sydney, the beginning of the New Year was marked by a dazzling fireworks display despite the devastating bush fire crisis.
More than 270,000 people signed an online petition to urge the city to not conduct the fireworks display, and instead, donate the money to the firefighting effort.
Due to the fires, thousands of people had to move away from their homes while some succumbed to the smoke caused by the fires. The blazes have damaged more than ten million acres of land.
The Mayor defended his decision to continue with the fireworks to welcome New Year as the budget for the even had been spent already and the celebration would generate near to £70million for the economy.
