New York Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency as cases of coronavirus rose to 89.
Coronavirus cases are expected to increase amid fears that 40 nurses, doctors and medical staff in a Queens hospital may have contracted the virus after the Uber driver tested positive.
70 of the state’s 89 cases are in Westchester, where a lawyer in Manhattan was struck down with the killer virus.
Cuomo said at a press conference: “We have now been testing around the clock.”
Furthermore, there are still thousands of New Yorkers waiting for their coronavirus test results.
“I’m not urging calm,” Cuomo said. “I’m urging reality. I’m urging a factual response as opposed to an emotional response… that people understand the information and not the hype.”
The governor also said that there’s no need to cancel large events in any part of New York.
The Queens driver, 33, has tested positive for coronavirus after walking into St. John’s Episcopal Hospital with flu-like symptoms.
He went home and came back again as his symptoms worsened. Test results confirmed that he had the virus.
This prompted 40 nurses, doctors and hospital staff to go into self-quarantine amid fears they have contracted the killer disease.
Councilman Donovan Richards Jr. said to The New York Times: “The hospital will need to replace those people temporarily. They will need money to do that. They need supplies. We need to keep the health care up and running.”
Thousands of people in the state who have returned from coronavirus hotspots of China, Italy, South Korea, Iran and Japan have been urged to self-quarantine.
“When we say you are on precautionary quarantine, that is a serious situation. We expect to act in good faith and comply with it. If you do not comply with it, there are other measures that we could take,” Cuomo said.
