New York passed a new that bans unvaccinated children from going to school amid the worst measles outbreak in decades.
Parents were given two weeks to provide vaccination records, and as the grace period nears its end, many anti-vax parents start to fight back.
Students can come back to school after the parents vaccinate them.
State health officials said to BuzzFeed News that 26,217 unvaccinated New York kids in private schools, public schools, daycare centers, prekindergarten programs and parochial schools obtained religious exemptions during the 2017 to 2018 school year.
Mayor Bill de Blasio declared an end to the measles outbreak earlier this month.
Since October 2018, there have been almost 700 measles cases in New York City.
According to the CDC, kids are most at risk from measles. 1 in every 20 children infected with the disease contract pneumonia, while 1 in every 1,000 dies from the condition. Other complications include brain swelling that can result in deafness or other disabilities.
One Facebook user commented: “Good! Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but when YOUR decisions affect MY child, something should be done. Good job, New York!”
Another wrote: “I have always found it interesting that people claim God doesn’t want people to get vaccinated. My thought is that why did God give us the ability to think and learn? We used that knowledge to create something that will protect us from disease.
Why in the world would you not use your GOD GIVEN knowledge? Maybe vaccines are God’s way of saying protect yourself from disease because I love you so much and don’t want your children to die anymore from vaccine preventable diseases. Just a thought.”
A third said: “I am 100% in support of New York’s new law and hope others follow suit.”
