People flocked to Central Park to take advantage of the warm sunny day despite the New York City being the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak.
Photos from the Sunday afternoon where temperatures hit 61 degrees show New Yorkers strolling around, some with masks while others not wearing any face coverings, despite being warned by authorities that coronavirus can spread via respiratory droplets that enter the body via nose, mouth, and eyes.
The tourist spot in Manhattan looked lively even though tourism had already ceased because of the killer virus that had infected over 760,000 people in the US and killed more than 40,500 as of April 20.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed an order that requires residents to wear a face mask. If they can’t stay six feet apart from the closest person, they must cover their nose and mouth with a cloth covering if masks are not available.
In New York alone, there are 247,215 confirmed cases with 18,298 fatalities as of this writing.
The NY Governor said the infection rate is declining and that the state is believed to be on the other side of the curve.
According to reports, Central Park temporarily became the site of a field hospital after facilities ran out of space for coronavirus victims. It has been lined with refrigerated trucks where corpses were kept after funeral homes became completely overwhelmed.
“We showed that we can control the beast and when you close down, you can actually slow that infection rate, but this is only halftime,” Cuomo warned.
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has also urged residents to report those who are not following the guidelines. But some claimed that doing so was ‘un-American.’
