A 7-week-old baby boy tested positive for Covid-19 after catching the killer disease from a family member.
Several members of the family have contracted the infection but it is not clear how they caught the virus.
According to reports, the boy hasn’t required hospitalization. Health officials also did not say which area of New South Wales the boy’s family is from.
Earlier this month, another newborn baby in the US passed away from coronavirus, becoming one of the youngest victims in the world.
This comes as schools in New South Wales consider using a roster system to bring some students back to class. The system is designed to allow some children to attend only on certain days and do work from home on other days when it’s their classmates turn to go to class.
The roster system would help maintain social distancing and keep schools less busy.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian said: “Students will not be in school full-time and I suspect the majority of learning will still be from home.”
Ms. Berejiklian also announced that face-to-face teaching will resume in the third week of term two.
But Victoria has no plans to resume face-to-face teaching. “If you can learn from home you must learn from home,” said James Merlino, the state’s education secretary.
He also said that 3% of students were going to class and the rest were studying at home.
Health experts in Australia say it is safe for kids to go to school as coronavirus doesn’t affect children as much as adults.
Covid-19 restrictions will be in place for four more weeks as Australia continues to lower the infection rate, said Scott Morrison.
Restaurants, gyms and pubs will be kept closed, gatherings will remain banned, and residents are encouraged to work from home where possible.
Funerals are limited to ten people and weddings to only five.
