Rock band AC/DC’s original drummer, Colin Burgess, has died at the age of 77, the group said in a heartbreaking statement on social media.
In a statement, the legendary rock group expressed their grief following the death of their original drummer, saying: “Very sad to hear of the passing of Burgess. He was our first drummer and a very respected musician. Happy memories, rock in peace, Colin.”
Even though Burgess served as the group’s drummer for a short period, he made a huge impact and his role is a cherished part of their history.
Before Burgess joined AC/DC, he had already established himself as a talented drummer. He performed with the Australian rock band The Masters Apprentices from 1968 to 1972 before serving as AC/DC’s drummer between November 1979 and February 1974.
During his time with the iconic rock band, he joined the ranks of the founding members, including singer Dave Evans, bassist Larry Van Kriedt, and sibling guitarists Malcolm and Angus Young.
But only months later, he left the band following the release of their first hit single, ‘Can I Sit Next to You Girl.’
Burgess reportedly departed from the band after he was accused of being intoxicated on stage during a live performance.
He claimed that his beverage had been spiked to save his position in the rock band but his efforts were in vain.
Even though his tenure with the band was short-lived, he left a huge mark on the group’s early history.
Fans shared their condolences on social media, with one person writing: “Very sad news as I love rock music especially from Australia, and he was a part of a generation of great musicians that kicked off the music industry in Australia, condolences to his family and friends.”
Another said: “Rest in peace Colin, you did a lot for young bands.”
Someone else added: “I’m very sad to hear of the passing of Colin may he rest in peace!”
Burgess’ legacy will live on through his music as well as the memories he created during his tenure with AC/DC.
