The Aladdin star was forced to delete his Twitter account after facing a backlash over his comments about The Little Mermaid remake.
31-year-old Mena Massoud, who appeared as Aladdin alongside Will Smith and Naomi Scott in the 2019 Disney live-action remake of Aladdin, has been facing the heat after voicing his opinion about the upcoming remake of The Little Mermaid.
Taking a jab at the much-anticipated movie, the actor said he didn’t think TLM would be hitting the billion-dollar mark at the box office as Aladdin did. He also added that he believes the movie will “undoubtedly” be getting a sequel even if the underperforms in comparison to his film.
“Our film was unique in that audiences went to watch it multiple times. It’s the only way we reached the billion-dollar mark with our opening. My guess is TLM doesn’t cross the billion mark but will undoubtedly get a sequel,” Massoud wrote.
The comment quickly sparked backlash and the actor has since not only deleted the post but also disabled his account.
As some critics of the Disney star insisted, Massoud’s comment implied that TLM wasn’t worthy of a sequel. Others suggested the actor was “bitter” due to mixed responses to Aladdin and due to the fact that there’s no sign of a sequel even though the movie reeled in over $1 billion at the box office.
Experts have suggested the comment could spark career trouble for the Aladdin star and potentially ruin his future in Hollywood.
The young man previously revealed that he was left jobless after the filming of Aladdin because he couldn’t land a single offer or audition.
“‘He must have made millions. He must be getting all these offers.’ It’s none of those things. I haven’t had a single audition since Aladdin came out,” Massoud said back in 2019.
“It’s like, I’m sitting here being like, okay, Aladdin just hit $1 billion — can I at least get an audition? Like I’m not expecting you to be like, ‘Here’s Batman.’ But can I just get in the room? Can you just give me a chance?”
