Angela Bassett made history in a huge moment for Marvel during the 2023 Golden Globes.
The 64-year-old actress won a Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe for her role as Ramonda, the Queen of Wakanda, in the 2022 Marvel blockbuster Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
While this is the second time Bassett won a Golden Globe, the honor represents the first major acting reward given to an actress for a role in a Marvel Studios movie.
“I’ve got to find my words. I’m so nervous my heart is just beating,” Bassett said.
“January 22, 1994, I stood on this stage and accepted the Golden Globe for ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It? The late Toni Morrison said that your life is already a miracle of chance just waiting for you to order its destiny but in order for that destiny to manifest, I think that it requires courage to have faith, it requires patience, as we just heard, and it requires a true sense of yourself.
”
Bassett previously took home a Golden Globe for her extraordinary portrayal of Tina Turner in a 1994 movie.
“It’s not easy because the past is circuitous and it has many unexpected detours but by the grace of god I stand here I stand here grateful, grateful to the Hollywood Foreign Press for giving me this honor, along with Wakanda Forever,” she added.
“Grateful to my amazing team who each and every day they worked along with me and beside me and on my behalf each and every day.”
Concluding her acceptance speech, the actress expressed her gratitude for her family and her husband as well as for her Marvel family.
“Thank you for embracing these characters and showing us so much love. We just made history with this nomination and with this award it belongs to all of you, all of us thank you,” she expressed.
