Backstreet Boys singer AJ McLean and his wife revealed their daughter changed her name and shared the reason why.

AJ McLean and wife Rochelle share two children including 5-year-old Lyric and a 9-year-old girl who was named Ava at her birth.

As the couple revealed after announcing their children are going back to school, their daughter has changed her name from Ava to Elliot.

Clarifying the name change that sparked rumors of gender transition, Rochelle spoke out and claimed the new name is “not a gender thing.”

“For those asking… not that it’s anyone’s business, Elliott’s name change is not a gender thing. Ava has changed her name quite a few times since she was about five,” the 40-year-old makeup artist wrote in her Instagram post.

“Last year she asked us to start calling her Elliott and it stuck. She wanted something unique that no one else had. (There are so many Ava’s.)”

While plenty of people suggested the child was still too young to change her name whenever she pleases, the ‘London’ singer’s wife admitted she sees nothing wrong with letting her daughter be unique.

“Come to think of it, it’s a little odd that as parents we choose names for people we haven’t even met yet and expect them to forever [identify] as that person!” Rochelle continued.

“Anyway… so that’s how Ava became Elliott.”

Concluding her post, the mom-of-two hit back at the critics and asked people to “be kind” because her daughter is simply “trying to make her way in this crazy world.”

She also added that she wants Elliott to remember she can always be whoever she wants to be in her life.
