Actress Bella Ramsey has opened up about their struggles to land roles because of their looks in the past.
The 19-year-old rising star is best known for her role as Lady Mormont in the HBO series Game of Thrones and as Ellie in the post-apocalyptic drama The Last of Us.
While Ramsey, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, is now sought after in the entertainment industry, getting roles wasn’t always smooth sailing for the actress.
As Bella revealed in an interview with GQ, they were constantly bullied for their “square head” and taunted for not having the “Hollywood look.”
“You’re looking for a comment that’s more painful than the last one, I’d kid myself that I was doing it in jest,” Ramsey recalled.
“I wish I could say that I was confident enough [already] that it hasn’t affected me in any way, but it has.”
Recalling the time they lost a prospective role simply because of their appearance, the teenager added: “I was told in one of my first auditions ever… The director really liked me but I didn’t get the part because I didn’t have the Hollywood look.”
Fortunately, Ramsey didn’t let the small hiccup stand in their way and went on to become a world-renowned celebrity with 26 acting credits to their name by the age of just 19 years old.
Besides their appearance in GoT and The Last of Us, Ramsey also had roles in the likes of Catherine Called Birdy, Becoming Elizabeth, and The Worst Witch. For her role in the latter, Ramsey won the BAFTA British Academy Children’s Award.
