US President Joe Biden has warned Russian President Vladimir Putin that US forces will defend NATO territory as he ordered more troops to Europe.
In his White House speech, Biden enforced new sanctions on Putin’s country and vowed that Russia would bear the consequences of his actions against Ukraine.
“Our forces are not going to Europe to fight in Ukraine, but to defend our NATO allies and reassure those allies in the ease,” he said.
“As I made crystal clear, the United States will defend every inch of NATO territory with the full force of American power.”
During the question-and-answer session, a reporter asked Biden if that meant American troops would fight if Russia attacked NATO allies.
“If he did move into NATO countries, we will be involved,” he warned. “We will be involved.”
Biden delivered his speech as Ukraine reported more casualties.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on Ukrainians to take up arms as Russian forces attack from north, south, and east.
“We are giving away weapons and we will continue doing so to anyone who will ask for it in order to protect our sovereignty,” he said. “Our future depends on each and every citizen.”
Ukrainian officials said they had lost control of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Zelenskyy took to Twitter and wrote: “Russia has embarked on a path of evil, but Ukraine is defending itself and won’t give up its freedom.”
Biden held a virtual meeting with the leaders from Canada, France, Italy, Britain, and Japan, and also figures from the European Union and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.
“Now I’m authorizing additional US force capabilities to deploy to Germany as part of NATO’s response, including some the US-based forces that the Department of Defense placed on standby weeks ago,” he said.
