Mr Big Stuff singer Jean Knight has passed away at the age of 80.
The iconic American soul and R&B singer died from natural causes; her publicist confirmed. Her death was originally announced by broadcaster LBJ who shared the singer’s family’s statement.
“Jean Knight’s legacy is not just a musical one; it is a testament to the enduring love between an artist, her hometown, and the fans who adored her,” the family wrote.
“As we bid farewell to this iconic soulstress, New Orleans and her global fan base join together in gratitude for the indelible mark she left on the world.”
In the lengthy statement, the family also remembered Knight’s achievements in the music career while recalling her love for cooking.
The soul and funk icon was best known for hits like Mr. Big Stuff, Do Me, Carry On, Your Six-Bit Change, A Little Bit Of Something, and more.
Upon its release in 1971, Mr. Big Stuff ranked #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart while conquering the top spot on the Billboard Soul Singles chart for more than a month.
“Her concerts were not just performances but celebrations of the enduring bond she shared with those who appreciated her music,” the singer’s family added.
“Whether in the intimate venues of the French Quarter or on the grand stages of global music festivals, Ms. Knight made every fan a cherished part of her extended musical family.”
Concluding their statement, Jean’s family asked for privacy while expressing heartfelt gratitude to the icon’s fans for their love and support.
