Health officials in the state of Louisiana just confirmed the first American-related death to the extremely pathogenic avian influenza H5N1.
The patient happened to be a male over the age of 65 who was reportedly suffering from a few underlying conditions.
He passed away after getting hospitalized with the virus. As confirmed by authorities, the man contracted the virus after being exposed to a combo of non-commercial backyard flock and wild birds.
The LDH shared more about how a thorough investigation took place but no additional cases or evidence was found about person-to-person transmission.
The matter remains to be the sole human case of H5N1 in the state and the country.
LDH reassured the public that the general risk at this moment still remains low for the entire population. Moreover, those working with birds and poultry or having direct exposure to matters like livestock could be at a greater risk than all others.
In another statement that was shared, the department expressed great sadness and deepest condolences to the entire family and loved ones of the deceased while confirming that no further updates were available at this moment in time.
However, they do hope to provide them in due time as related to patient confidentiality.
