A 48-year-old man has been set free from Guantanamo Bay after being held for almost 20 years after being accused of making bombs.
According to local media reports, the alleged suspect was identified as Sufiyian Bahhoumi who is said to be from Algeria. Despite being held as a prisoner during this time duration, it is believed that he was not tried for even a single crime.
Moreover, he was held upon suspicion related to links with top extremist groups in his home country, yet he was sent back home on Sunday, striking great concern and suspicion.
The suspect was allegedly captured from Pakistan in the year 2002 and was then found to have links with terrorist organizations other than Al-Qaeda and the Taliban. But the fact that he wasn’t asked to face a single trial for his crimes has critics around the world wondering what he was really in there for.
Meanwhile, one review board of Guantanamo Bay had reportedly approved his release in the year 2016, which was reportedly signed by former US President Barack Obama.
Despite the new order being stalled underneath the Trump organization, no recent happening in the case was observed.
Now, the Algerian government has gone ahead and mentioned how there are a number of strict security measures required to reduce the risk in the country and that’s why they are doing everything in their power to achieve just that.
The alleged suspect is known to be the sole caretaker of his elderly mother, reports added.
Meanwhile, America’s Department of Justice has reportedly revealed how the 48-year-old was repatriated after receiving great assurances from his home country’s government about his humane treatment while receiving guarantees about his security and the measures being taken to help reduce any sort of risk that he may post for others.
As of now, the Pentagon is yet to provide any detailed account regarding those measures which will most likely include a greater restriction on travel.
