Brendan Fraser has spoken out about his first-ever Oscar nomination and revealed that the honor has changed his life.
The beloved Hollywood star, who was nominated in the Best Actor category for his role as an obese English teacher in the 2022 drama The Whale, has made an epic reappearance in the world of entertainment after disappearing from the spotlight for years.
On Tuesday, Fraser was named as one of the five Best Actors nominees by the Academy Awards. For the Oscar, The Mummy star will compete against Colin Farrell of The Banshees of Inisherin, Austin Butler of Elvis, Bill Nighy of Living, and Paul Mescal of Aftersun.
Following the Oscar nomination, the 54-year-old issued a tear-jerking statement obtained by the People magazine.
“I’m absolutely overjoyed and deeply grateful to The Academy for this recognition and for recognizing Hong Chau’s beautiful performance and Adrien Morot’s incredible makeup,” Fraser expressed, noting his co-star Hong Chau, who was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress Category, and Adrien Morot, who was nominated in the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Category.point 528 | 1
He continued: “I wouldn’t have this nomination without [director] Darren Aronofsky, [writer] Samuel D. Hunter, A24 and the extraordinary cast and crew who gave me the gift of Charlie.
“A gift I certainly didn’t see coming, but it’s one that has profoundly changed my life. THANK YOU!”
The Oscar nomination comes shortly after Fraser won the Golden Globe and broke into tears during an emotional speech on the stage.
“If you — like Charlie, who I played in this movie — in any way, struggle with obesity, or you just feel like you’re in a dark sea, I want you to know that if you, too, can have the strength to just get to your feet and go to the light, good things will happen,” the actor said.
