Brendan Fraser shared a heartfelt message after receiving TIFF’s highest-ranking award.
The American-Canadian actor, who starred in the likes of The Mummy, George of the Jungle, and Gods and Monsters, has made an epic comeback to his acting career with his appearance as overweight teacher Charlie in The Whale.
Following his masterful performance in the movie directed by Darren Aronofsky, the 53-year-old actor appeared at the Venice Film Festival where he teared up as he received a standing ovation.
Now, the actor also reunited with Michelle Yeoh, his co-star in The Mummy: Tomb for the Dragon Emperor, as the pair met at the Toronto International Film Festival Tribute Awards.
Before proceeding to claim their respective awards, the pair posed for a sweet selfie to mark their reunion 14 years after they met on The Mummy set.
During the ceremony, Yeoh was lauded with the inaugural TIFF Share Her Journey Groundbreaker Award over her performance in the comedy/drama sci-fi film Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Meanwhile, Brendan Fraser got emotional as he was honored with TIFF’s Tribute Award for his outstanding performance in The Whale.
“Wow, this is new for me because normally I am the guy at the podium who hands these things out,” Fraser said as he teared up in front of the audience.
“I think that the last time I waited to hear my name called out loud to receive an award was in grade 4 and it was from the peewee bowling league.”
Fraser’s appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival Tribute Awards comes shortly after he received a 6-minute standing ovation at the Venice International Film Festival.
In The Whale, for which the actor underwent a major physical transformation, Fraser plays an obese teacher who according to director Aronofsky “has gone through significant life changes and he’s forgotten about who he is and the ones he loves and he’s running out of time to tell them that if he can at all.”
