Brittney Griner’s wife has spoken out and thanked her supporters after the WNBA star had safely returned to the States.
The 32-year-old basketballer was sentenced to nine years in a Russian penal colony after being found guilty of cannabis oil possession while traveling to Russia.
On Friday, however, she was released and returned home after the US agreed to a prisoner swap involving the notorious Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.
Following her return to the States, Griner was given a warm welcome by her loved ones including her wife Cherelle.
“Yesterday my heart was made whole thanks to the collective efforts of MANY! I’m humbled by their hearts. To care for another, a stranger to some, a friend to some – is humanity in its purest form,” Cherelle wrote in her post.
“As BG and I start our journey to heal our minds, bodies, and spirits— I wanted to personally say thank you to some of the hands; seen and unseen, that helped make it possible for me to see my wife again!”
In a reference to the American spy Paul Whelan who is still serving time in Russia, Cherelle concluded: “I appreciate each and every one of you! Let’s continue to use our hands, voices, platforms, and resources to bring Paul and all Americans home. All families deserve to be whole!”
The message comes shortly after Brittney’s agent, Lindsay Kagawa Colas, that it’s time for the basketballer to rest before deciding what she does next in her life.
“If she wants to play, it will be for her to share. She has the holidays to rest and decide what’s next without any pressure,” Colas told ESPN following the prisoner swap in the UAE.
Speaking out about the release was also White House spokesman John Kirby who revealed that Griner was in “very, very good spirits” on her way home.
