DJ Casper, the creator of the song Cha-Cha Slide, has passed away at the age of 58.
The American DJ and songwriter, whose real name was William Perry Jr., succumbed to his battle with liver and kidney cancer, his wife Kim revealed.
The tragic news comes seven years after the entertainer, who was best known for his 2000 hit son Cha Cha Slide, was diagnosed with the disease.
“They diagnosed me in 2016 with two kinds of cancer, which is renal and Neuroendocrine, which is kidney and liver. They went in to try to do surgery, and they found out the kidney was connected to the main artery, so they decided not to do it and just treat it,” Perry said in his final interview in May 2023.
“I used to weigh 236 pounds, and I think I’m about 60 pounds less. If you know me, you know I’m not going to stop. I’m going to continue to go. I’m going to continue to go until I can’t go.”
The beloved performer also revealed that he originally created his hit song Cha Cha Slide for his nephew’s exercise routine at Bally’s Total Fitness.
“When I first did it, I did it as an aerobic exercise for my nephew at Bally’s. From there, it just took off,” he added.
“I have one of the biggest songs that played at all stadiums: hockey, basketball, football, baseball; they played it at the Olympics. It was something that everybody could do.”
Since its creation in 2000, the song became a huge hit around the globe and often appeared in school dances, weddings, and other events.
