China has accused the US of spreading ‘disinformation’ after it was recently reported that Russia has asked Beijing for assistance over the invasion of Ukraine.
Beijing’s foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said that the US is “targeting China on the Ukraine issue with malicious intentions” after American officials warned that Russia had requested aid and military supplies.
US national security adviser Jake Sullivan, who will meet his Chinese counterparts today, had warned China of ‘consequences’ if Beijing tries to ‘bail out’ Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Speaking to NBC before the meeting, Sullivan said: “We will ensure that neither China, nor anyone else, can compensate Russia for these losses.
“In terms of the specific means of doing that, I’m not going to lay all of that out in public, but we will communicate that privately to China, as we have already done and will continue to do.”
Unnamed officials say that Russia has reached out to China for military supplies but it is not clear when the request was made or what the Kremlin was looking for.
While China has strong relations with Moscow, it also doesn’t want to lose its ties to Western countries that are currently sanctioning Russia.
Reports reveal that China doesn’t call Russia’s attack an invasion as it tries to preserve ties with both Russia and the West.
Chinese embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu said: “China is deeply concerned and grieved on the Ukraine situation,” adding that he wasn’t aware of any suggestions Beijing might help Russia.
“We sincerely hope that the situation will ease and peace will return at an early date.”
