Chris Hemsworth is reportedly taking a step back from acting after his shock diagnosis.
The 39-year-old Hollywood actor is said to be reconsidering his career decisions after finding out he was genetically predisposed to getting Alzheimer’s. The diagnosis means that he is 8 to 10 times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s than the general population.
While the Avengers star insisted he is far from retiring from acting, sources confirmed he won’t take on as many roles as he would under normal conditions.
“He doesn’t plan to take on many roles because of [high risk of developing] Alzheimer’s,” an insider told PageSix.
Back in November, Hemsworth also spoke to Vanity Fair to confirm that he’s taking “a more curated approach to things” and that he’s “not talking about retiring by any means.”
“Yeah, there was an intensity to navigating it. Most of us, we like to avoid speaking about death in the hope that we’ll somehow avoid it,” he said after finding out he is one of the two to three percent of people who carry two copies of gene APOE4.
“We all have this belief that we’ll figure it out. Then to all of a sudden be told some big indicators are actually pointing to this as the route which is going to happen, the reality of it sinks in. Your own mortality.”
The actor also revealed that he will embark on a healthier lifestyle as a result of his diagnosis. A part of this new lifestyle will likely be a more relaxed work schedule.
“For me, the positive of it was like: ‘Right, if I didn’t know this information, I wouldn’t have made the changes I made,’” he added.
“I just wasn’t aware of any of it, so now I feel thankful that I have in my arsenal the sort of tools to best prepare myself and prevent things happening in that way.”
