A furious mother found her 2-year-old daughter locked inside a dark room at her daycare center after she arrived to pick her up only a few minutes late.
Stephanie Martinez from Florida is now pursuing legal action against Plantation KinderCare after she saw her daughter Anastasia alone and locked in a dark room.
She immediately called 911 and told the dispatcher that her daughter was “crying, she’s in there by herself.”
The Plantation Fire Department rushed to the place and forced the door open to free the young girl.
Nichole Burrillo, the assistant director of the daycare, told police that she and Lucilena Viggiano, a teacher, were the last ones inside the building.
She said that Viggiano uses a tablet to check all of the kids out before closing the building at 6 pm. Some staff stay later as some parents come late.
Viggiano and Burrillo left around 6:20 pm and Martinez arrived 8 minutes later. Both employees have been placed on administrative leave after the incident.
In a statement to NBC 6, KinderCare confirmed that its affiliates are investigating the incident.
“It’s the worst feeling ever. You feel helpless,” Martinez said. “You can’t do anything to console her. She was definitely stressed out and definitely crying the whole time she was there by herself.”
She added: “Nobody should ever go through this. You pay for trust and they completely voided that. I have no words, I’m still in shock right now.”
The young girl’s aunt, Samantha Scaramellino, took to Facebook and wrote: “I still can’t believe this even happened. Tonight my two-year-old niece was left in the daycare center after they closed.”
Martinez said she is now planning on taking legal action against the daycare to “ensure that nothing like this happens to another child.”
