A star athlete from the Olympics Rebecca Cheptegei has tragically passed away in a terrifying incident.
She was reported to have been doused in gasoline and set on fire by her former lover.
The 33-year-old star marathon runner competed for her home country Uganda during this year’s Paris Olympics but who knew that her fame and life would be so short-lived?
The star suffered from serious burns that covered more than 75% of her body after a disagreement she had with her lover on Monday.
BBC reported how the pair were heard engaging in a verbal fight by neighbors located nearby. Things suddenly went from bad to worse and during that altercation, her lover poured a liquid across her body before he burned her to death.
Sadly, she suffered serious burn injuries and ended up passing away as confirmed by the hospital’s acting director.
The country’s athletics federation shared the heartbreaking and tragic news update by publishing a post which read, ‘We are deeply saddened to reveal the passing of our athlete Rebecca Cheptegei during the early hours of the morning. She fell victim to domestic violence.’
The statement was followed by a condemnation of the act as many await for justice.
