American author, journalist, and activist Amanda Cox has weighed in on Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s defamation trial.
Cox, who spent four years in an Italian prison after being accused of a murder she didn’t commit, said there can be no winners in the Depp-Heard trial because all of their trauma, pain, and ugliness have already been shown to millions of people across the world.
“Who wins in a trial like this? Not Depp. Not Heard. Not us,” she wrote in an op-ed for the Independent.
“But can’t we condemn the spectacle and yet still sift the evidence to arrive at our conclusions about the guilt and innocence of these two human beings whose trauma and pain and ugliness has been paraded before us?
“I’m not going to tell you my opinion on the Depp v Heard trial. My opinion is just that, an opinion, and it doesn’t matter. And frankly, neither does yours.”
Cox also admitted that she is “still dealing with the psychological trauma of the public shaming” that she endured after her wrongful conviction for the murder of British student Meredith Kercher back in 2007.
The author previously voiced her support for Depp back in 2020 when he launched a libel case against The Sun after the publication branded him as a wife-beater.
As Cox insisted, she didn’t voice support for Depp because she thought he was innocent but because “he was being punished by the court of public opinion without a guarantee for proportional sentencing or a right to appeal.”
Now, while watching the trial in Virginia, Cox also voiced her sympathy for Heard who has been branded as a liar by Johnny Depp’s countless fans.
“There’s a special kind of rancor that is directed at women,” she added.
“The more credible evidence that has emerged in Heard’s favor, the more violent the rhetoric against her has become.”
