Disney’s Mama Coco Star, Ana Ofelia Murguia, Has Passed Away


Ana Ofelia Murguia, best known for voicing Mama Coco in Disney’s animated film Coco, has sadly passed away at the age of 90.

The heartbreaking news was confirmed by Mexico’s National Institute of Fine Arts and National Theater Company on social media.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the company wrote: “With deep sadness, we regret the sensitive death of the first actress Ana Ofelia Murguía, who was part of the stable cast of the @CNTeatromx del #INBAL and whose artistic career was vital for the performing arts of Mexico.”

The post added: “We send condolences and warm hugs to his family and friends.”

In another post, The National Theater Company described Murguia as ‘one of Mexico’s greatest actresses.’

Lucina Jimenez Lopez, the director of the National Institute of Fine Arts, also said that Murguia’s career ‘marked an entire era.’

The star had been performing for more than 70 years, taking on the roles of villains in film and entertainment industry.

Murguia gained global popularity for performing in Disney’s Oscar-winning animated movie, Coco.

The 2017 film follows the story of a young boy who crosses over to the land of the dead during the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos and discovers a family secret.

The movie received big awards including two Academy awards, one for the Best Original Song for ‘Remember Me,’ and one for Best Animated Feature.

Murguia appeared in more than 90 movies and 70 plays. She also had a long list of accolades, winning best supporting actress for her impressive performances in 1979 Cadena Perpetua, 1986 Los Motivos de Luz, and 1996 La Reina de la Noche.

Murguia was also awarded the Ingmar Bergman Medal from the National Autonomous University of Mexico as she left an ‘indelible mark’ on Mexican theatre and film.
