The doctor who happened to be at the bedside of Pope Francis is breaking his silence.
He explained how he approached him during his tragic final moments and how doctors fulfilled one of his final wishes.
Sergio Alferi mentioned how he carried out two important operations on the Pope in 2021 and even in 2023, so he was very close to him.
He explained how the Pope didn’t respond to any kind of stimuli from medical staff as he lay open-eyed in a coma shortly before his death.
Alfieri coordinated with the Holy Father’s doctors at the Gemelli Hospital and said the late Pope didn’t have any kind of breathing issues after he visited the Santa Marta residence.
But when he took his name, there was no response, and when he carried out some painful stimuli, again no response. That was when he knew that something was not right.
The doctor shared how the Pope used to always tell him that he would like to die at home.
So when his condition was worsening, they risked him dying on his way to the hospital.
He knew from his symptoms that it would be useless to shift him to the hospital, as his time had come and he was going. ‘This was a tough call for me, seeing him pass away was tragic. He never wanted to be at the hospital during his final moment, and that’s what happened,d’- the surgeon shared.
