A glacier that many scientists have dubbed the ‘doomsday’ glacier is said to be on the verge of collapse, hanging on by its fingernails.
According to local media outlets, Thwaites Glacier is commonly called the doomsday glacier due to one simple fact. It has the tendency to raise the sea level by a few several feet. Moreover, now that more reports about its erosion are arriving, many fear for the worst for obvious reasons.
Scientists are ringing plenty of alarm bells in this regard. They claim the underwater base for this glacier is undergoing erosion thanks to the rise in earth’s temperature, as mentioned recently in a study that was published in Nature Geoscience.
One marine geophysicist explained how the incident is really mindboggling for obvious reasons. And these are signals that cannot be taken lightly.
“We should expect to see huge changes occur over minute timescales in the near future”- he added. This is when the glacier retreats beyond a tiny ridge in its bed.
This glacier that’s located in the western part of Antarctica is almost double the size of the state of Florida. It has the tendency to potentially increase the sea level, in case it falls down into the ocean. And that time isn’t far, scientists predict. It would soon be happening in the next three years.
The consequences could be detrimental as it could raise the global sea level by a staggering 16 feet.
This mega glacier’s size could be well compared to that of Florida. Moreover, it could potentially increase the sea level, in case it falls down into the ocean. And that’s a possibility that could ensue in the next few years.
NASA is similarly worried. They feel there could be a rise in the global sea level by around 16 feet if and when this takes place. So as you can see. it’s an alarming situation.
