A hardworking teenager has reportedly broken down into tears after losing her $37,000 life savings, thanks to a very professionally themed phone scam.
Sources from local media outlets have gone on to confirm how the news brought the teen to the verge of tears and now, she wants more and more people to be aware so that it does not happen to them.
18-year-old Aurora Casilli who hails from Albany, WA says she was scammed out of $37,000 after getting a text that she incorrectly assumed was from her bank.
She didn’t pay too much attention to the news as she felt that if the bank sent it, it would be authentic. Instead of double-checking, she simply read what it said.
The message claimed that her account had been hacked. Therefore, the message was a warning that someone was trying to hack into her bank account and she didn’t know what to do about it.
The text appeared to be authentic and from a reliable source which was the National Bank of Australia. It similarly appeared in the thread where her previous bank messages were found. Therefore, she knew that it must be correct but that was not the case as this was one of the most sophisticated scams of them all.
This amount inside her account was a part of her life savings that she had made from her job. Panicked as ever, she called up the phone number mentioned in the text message.
The technique used here by the scammer is called spoofing where they disguise themselves to appear as another individual.
The person on the phone acted like a representative from the bank and said he was going to guide her to transfer her funds to another safe place so that it would be secure. But that was a scammer who ended up taking her money and making a run for it.
