Dwayne Johnson has opened up about his battle with depression and his failed marriage in a candid appearance on The Pivot podcast.
While the Hollywood superstar previously spoke openly about his mental health struggles as a teenager after his mother had attempted to take her own life, he now also opened up about the depression he went through following his split from Dany Garcia in 2007.
“I left school, but the interesting thing at the time is, I didn’t know what mental health was. I didn’t know what depression was. I just knew I didn’t want to be there,” the Jumanji star admitted.
Johnson went on to say that his battle with depression continued after the end of his football career and later on after his split from Garcia.
Fortunately, however, he was able to identify the issue and lean on other people for support. He also recognized the importance of standing up to the condition by accepting it and being willing to talk about it.
“I’ve worked hard over the years to gain the emotional tools to work through any mental pain that may come to test me,” he added.
“As men, we didn’t talk about it. We just kept our head down and worked through it. Not healthy, but it’s all we knew. If you’re going through your own version of mental wellness turning into mental hell-ness, the most important thing you can do is talk to somebody. Having the courage to talk to someone is your superpower.”
Following his divorce from Garcia, Dwayne eventually started a relationship with Lauren Hashian and the pair tied the knot in 2019. They share daughters Jasmine, 7, and Tiana, 5.
