Billie Eilish has just won her first Oscar for “No Time To Die” at the 2022 Academy Awards.
Billie Eilish made history last Sunday night at the 2022 Academy Awards when the James Bond ballad she wrote with her brothers, Finneas, “No Time to Die,” won best original song.
Not only did she become the youngest artist to win three awards for the same song, she previously took home a Grammy and Golden Globe, but the songwriting duo also became the first siblings to win in this category since Robert B. Sherman and Richard M. Sherman, who won the 1964 award for “Chim Chim Cher-ee” from Mary Poppins.
The haunting track, which was first released in February 2020 and later served as the signature tune for the film of the same name, filled the star-studded Dolby Theatre as Billie sang and Finneas played the piano.
Accompanied by musicians behind them, the siblings both wore black looks as they delivered their incredible performance. Following the epic performance, Billie and Finneas won their first-ever Oscar, taking home the award for Best Original Song.
Eilish said: “This is so unbelievable, I could scream,” thanking the “No Time to Die” creative team as she and her brother took the stage to accept their award.
Finneas said: “We want to thank our parents, who have always been our greatest inspirations, we love you as our parents and we love you as real people too. Thank you so much to the Academy, we promise not to lose these.”
No Time to Die was one of five nominees this year for Best Original Song, joining King Richard’s Be Alive, Encanto’s Dos Oruguitas, Belfast’s Down to Joy, and Four Good Days’ Somehow You Do.
The siblings were in the claimed musical company as Beyoncé, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Van Morrison, and Diane Warren are some of the names behind the songs.
The siblings told ET in a statement: “Words cannot describe how honored and excited we are to have been nominated for an Academy Award for our song No Time to Die. It was a lifelong dream of ours to write a Bond theme, and one we never thought would ever come true.”
“It’s completely unbelievable that we are here being recognized for this song, and this is a peak life experience for us as songwriters and artists. To be recognized today among these other incredible nominees is something we most certainly do not take for granted,” they added.
Eilish, is the second-youngest winner ever in the category, trailing only Markéta Irglová, who was four days shy of turning 20 when she won in February 2008 for co-writing “Falling Slowly” from Once.
Eilish might have become the youngest winner ever in this category if COVID hadn’t happened and No Time to Die had come out on schedule in 2020. If that had happened, she might have won the award at the Oscars in their usual time slot in late February 2021, when she was 19 and two months.
