Tesla boss Elon Musk announced that he will resign as the CEO of Twitter after an embarrassing defeat in his own poll.

The 51-year-old will step down as Twitter CEO, saying he would ‘abide by’ the humiliating result of the poll he organized where he asked users whether he should resign as head of the social media platform.

He now confirmed that he would step down from the role as soon as he finds someone ‘foolish enough’ to take over.

“I will resign as CEO as soon as I find someone foolish enough to take the job! After that, I will just run the software & servers teams,” he wrote.

In December 18, he posted on Twitter: “Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the result of this poll.”

More than 17 million users voted, with 57.5 percent saying yes, he should step down.

After Musk set the poll, he warned: “As the saying goes, be careful what you wish, as you might get it.”

This comes after Musk suspended the accounts of several journalists, complaining they had published details about his private jet, which he claimed could leave his family in danger.

Employees of The Washington Post, the New York Times, and CNN were among those affected in the move that faced criticism.

On Sunday, it was announced that Twitter users would no longer be allowed to share content from other social media platforms.

But Musk quickly reversed it and said that the policy would be limited to ‘suspecting accounts only when the account’s ‘primary’ purpose is promotion of competitors.’

“Going forward, there will be a vote for major policy changes. My apologizes. Won’t happen again,” he wrote.

The poll comes after weeks of controversial decisions including readmitting far-right figures to the social media platform, firing half of the global staff, and trying to charge for some services.
