Heartbreaking footage shows the moment a Japan Airlines plane became engulfed in flames on the runway at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport after it collided with a second plane.
The collision reportedly happened at 5:47 local time and involved the coastguard aircraft MA722, which was carrying six people, including the pilot.
The coastguard’s aircraft was set to deliver aid to areas that had been hit by an earthquake on Monday.
According to reports, Japan Airlines Flight 516 had been traveling from Shin Chitose Airport on the northern island of Hokkaido and there were 379 people onboard.
Videos taken by horrified passengers from inside the plane showed plumes of smoke.
One person who claimed to be a passenger took to X, formerly Twitter, and wrote: “I thought I was going to die.”
Japan Airlines reported that all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated from the aircraft.
Sadly, the five people onboard the coastguard aircraft died from the collision.
At least 17 of the passengers and crew from the Japan Airlines flight suffered minor injuries, according to NHK.
The coastguard aircraft’s pilot is also receiving treatment due to injuries sustained.
Anton Deibe, one of the passengers on board the plane, described to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet how “the entire cabin was filled with smoke within a few minutes.”
“Then the emergency doors were opened and we threw ourselves at them. The smoke in the cabin stung like hell. It was a hell.”
Investigations into the incident are still underway.
This comes after western Japan was hit by deadly 7.6 earthquake on New Year’s Day, with almost 100,000 residents ordered to evacuate.
As authorities continued to search for people under the rubble of burned and collapsed buildings, the death toll rose to at least 55.
