American actress and General Hospital star Sonya Eddy has passed away at the age of just 55 years.
The tragic news was announced by Eddy’s friend and Oscar winner Octavia Spencer who confirmed the actress’s passing but didn’t provide the cause of death.
“My friend @sonyaeddy passed away last night. The world lost another creative angel. Her legions of @generalhospitalabc fans will miss her,” Spencer wrote in her post.
“My thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones, friends, and fans!”
Eddy was born in Concord, California, back in 1967. After graduating from theatre and dance at the University of California, Davis, Sonya became a licensed vocational nurse and went on to make her acting debut in 1990’s ‘Zora Is My Name’.
In the years that followed, the actress appeared in dozens of movies including High School High, The Godson, Inspector Gadget, The Jennie Project, Daddy Day Care, One Last Ride, Seven Pounds, Good on Paper, and many more.
She also secured minor roles in plenty of television shows such as Seinfeld, Married… with Children, Beverly Hills, 90210, 3rd Rock from the Sun, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Desperate Housewives, and more.
Eddy, however, was probably best known for her recurring role as nurse Epiphany Johnson in 543 episodes of General Hospital and the series spin-off General Hospital: Night Shift.
“I am heartbroken about the loss of the incredible Sonya Eddy. I truly loved her not only as an actress but as a friend,” General Hospital Executive Producer Frank Valentini expressed in a tear-jerking tribute to the late actress.
“The lights in the hub of the nurses’ station will now be a bit dimmer, but her spirit and light will live on in both the show and our set. On behalf of the entire GH cast and crew, we send our deepest sympathy to her family, friends, and fans. She will be very missed.”
Our thoughts are with Sonya’s family and friends during this tragic time.
