9-year-old Matilda Handy from England was left heartbroken after her grandmother and grandfather both passed away recently.

Since her ordeal, the child suggested building a mailbox where people could drop off personal letters and say their final goodbyes to their loved ones with complete privacy.

The idea has been quickly adopted by Gedling Crematorium in Nottinghamshire and the postbox they installed has since already collected more than one hundred “letters to heaven.”

“It was very nice because I’m very upset and it’s just a very nice way to express my feelings and send a letter to them and to say how much I love them,” Matilda said after her idea came to life.

The special postbox was also well-accepted by the local community with Matilda’s mom, Leanne, admitting that people always approach them to ask if they, too, can submit letters of their own.

“Like all Westerleigh Group’s sites, it’s our aim to have a very positive presence within our local communities, and I am delighted that the Letters to Heaven post box seems to have captured the imagination – and interest – of many people,” the crematorium’s site manager, Giulia McDonough, expressed.

The crematorium also clarified that stamps are not required because the mailbox is serviced by the company and not by the Royal Mail.

They also shared the good news that the mailbox has already collected more than one hundred letters and that thousands of people appeared to like the idea on social media.
