The FIFA World Cup has officially begun in Doha, Qatar today but it isn’t free of the many controversies that continue to haunt the country.
From human rights abuse scandals to the frowning of public displays of affection- Qatar is really making the headlines for obvious reasons. And now, we’re seeing the country’s royal family make a sudden U-turn decision to ban alcohol at the sporting event.
Therefore, new reports are going as far as suggesting how many beer cans would be going to waste as the booze ban arises in one of the world’s biggest sporting festivals.
While the tournament’s official sponsor is still Budweiser, we’re seeing thousands of can pile up at warehouses but it would be of no use as fans wouldn’t be allowed to drink them.
Now, Qatar says that only those beers that are non-alcoholic would be allowed for sale at the stadium where many national teams of different countries come face to face.
The news has left a brand like Budweiser with the prospect of large amounts of stock that now going to absolute waste. And that too, at the 11th hour.
The beverage giant was called out as the biggest sponsor for the event and now, it’s been given a monopoly to sell beer at grounds that are alcohol-free.
As one can probably imagine, the news isn’t being taken too well as recently reported by The Sun. Fans were furious and demanded an immediate refund from the bosses of the world cup as the decision was so abrupt and came this Friday. It is due to immense pressure from the country’s royal family.
Other speculations have gone as far as suggesting that Qatar would be rewarding all the cans to that nation who comes out victorious in the end so we’ll have to wait till the end of the event to see whether or not that comes out to be true.
