Grammy Awards hosts poked fun at Will Smith’s disgraceful slapping of Chris Rock with one comedian wearing a helmet to the stage.
Kicking off the 64th Grammy Awards’ pre-show, 65-year-old actor, director, and TV host LeVar Burton warned the audience that he was a comedian before urging everyone to keep their hands to themselves in a reference to the shocking turn of events at this year’s Oscars during which Will Smith slapped Chris Rock in the face.
“I want to warn you all that our next presenter is a comedian, if you know what I mean,” Burton joked.
“So, I need to caution everybody, remain in your seats and keep your hands to yourself.”
The veteran actor then announced the next presenter, Best Comedy Award nominee Nate Bargatze, who wore a helmet to the stage and joked that all comedians have to wear protective gear following the Academy Awards incident.
“They said comedians had to wear these now at awards shows during the Joke Wars,” Bargatze said, prompting laughs in the audience.
Poking fun at the controversial events at Dolby Theatre was also host Trevor Noah who drew a reference to Will Smith’s slapping in his opening speech.
“Don’t even think of this as an award show. It’s a concert where we are giving out awards, we will be listening to music, dancing, sing, keeping people’s names out of our mouths and we are going to give people awards all throughout the night,” he said.
The comment comes a week after Will Smith sparked fury after storming the 94th Academy Awards stage and slapping presenter Chris Rock in the face over his joke about his wife’s baldness.
After returning to his seat, the A-list Hollywood star repeatedly yelled at Rock saying: “Keep my wife’s name out your f***ing mouth!”
