The Duke of Sussex has broken his silence about his surprise visit to see his grandmother, the Queen, last week.
Prince Harry, who met Her Majesty at Windsor Castle before going to the Netherlands for the Invictus Games, said it was ‘great to see her.’
The father-of-two also said that the Queen had given words of support for people who were participating, adding that she would’ve loved to be there.
Speaking to the BBC, Harry said: “She had plenty of messages for Team UK which I’ve already passed on to most of them.
“So, it was great to see her and I’m sure she would love to be here if she could.”
Harry and his wife Meghan were in the front row for the sitting volleyball as the competition started in The Hague.
The Sussexes watched the action beside Jaco Van Gass, a Paralympian gold medalist and former Invictus player who suffered life-changing injuries with the British Army.
It’s been 16 years since Mr. Van Gass left his home in South Africa to pursue a military career. But he was hit by a rochet-propelled grenade in Afghanistan while serving with the Parachute Regiment.
In 2011, he met the Duke of Sussex when Harry joined the record-breaking team of injured soldiers.
Mr. Van Gass said it was ‘amazing’ to see the Sussexes, adding that it was ‘wonderful’ to talk to them as they were ‘friendly as ever.’
He also said that the duke told him that he was having a “really, really good time.”
“Invictus is his family, basically,” Mr. Van Gass said. “There’s so many familiar faces that he’s not seen in a while, and again to all the nations, just to catch up with them again.
“He’s back with his own people, he’s back in an environment that he’s so natural in and that he cares about.
“I think that’s the most important thing – this great depth of care that he has for the games.”
