On Friday, family, friends, and fans of Harry Potter star Robbie Coltrane plunged into mourning after his agent announced the actor’s death.
Known also by his real name of Anthony Robert McMillan, the 72-year-old Scottish actor was best known for his role as the giant Hagrid – the beloved Hogwarts gamekeeper in the Harry Potter franchise.
Robbie was also well-known for playing criminal psychologist Dr Eddie ‘Fitz’ Fitzgerald in the 90s ITV crime drama Cracker.
In the years after the release of the Harry Potter movies, the actor’s co-stars frequently spoke out to praise Robbie for his kind and generous nature both on screen and in private life.
Among Robbie’s biggest fans was also Emma Watson who played Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies alongside main stars Rupert Grint starring as Ron Weasley and Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter.
In her touching tribute, the actress recalled her co-star as a “caring” and “compassionate” person who always made everyone laugh and ensured that everyone was well taken care of.
“Robbie was like the most fun uncle I’ve ever had but most of all he was deeply caring, and compassionate towards me as a child and an adult,” Watson wrote in her tribute to the actor.
“His talent was so immense it made sense he played a giant – he could fill ANY space with his brilliance.”
The tribute comes as a sweet photo showing Robbie and Emma chatting at the franchise’s 20th anniversary earlier this year emerged.
“Robbie, if I ever get to be so kind as you were to me on a film set I promise I’ll do it in your name and memory. Know how much I adore and admire you,” the tribute continued.
“I’ll really miss your sweetness, your nicknames, your warmth, your laughs and your hugs. You made us a family. Know you were that to us. There was no better Hagrid. You made it a joy to be Hermione.”
Our thoughts are with Robbie’s family and friends during this challenging time.
