Henry Cavill was reportedly fired from his Superman role shortly after teasing a return to the franchise.
The 39-year-old Man Of Steel star on Wednesday shocked his followers by announcing he will not be returning to the screens as Superman in the near future.
While Cavill previously hinted at a return to the iconic role with his cameo in Black Adam, it now appears that the new heads of Warner Bros. DC Films changed their minds with sources suggesting they could be looking for a younger lead.
“I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran [the new DC Films producers] and it’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman,” the actor wrote in a lengthy statement.
“After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life.”
The statement went on: “The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”
Cavill also addressed his most loyal supporters and urged them not to forget that “Superman is still around” and that “everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there.”
“My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards,” he concluded.
The sad news comes just weeks after Henry happily talked about his role as Superman and hinted at a return to the franchise.
“It’s been five years now. I never gave up hope. It’s amazing to be here now talking about it again,” he said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
Cavill further suggested he is “excited to tell a story with an enormously joyful Superman.”
Hinting an epic comeback was also the British actor’s surprise cameo in the DC Film Black Adam starring Dwayne Johnson.
